Rockway Wins National Titles at JHS Championship

Rockway Middle at South Regional

Rockway Middle continues to make waves on the national scene winning national championships in the Under 1250 and the Under 750 sections this past weekend. They also placed 2nd in the Unrated section and 5th in the Under 1000 division. Jose Marti placed 4th in the Unrated section. LL Curry also sent a small contingent. Rockway is coached by teacher Nestor Carrerou and MICA's International Master Blas Lugo.


Arguably, the most impressive result was Christian Jimenez 1809 ( see game below against the overall Open section winner Alec Getz 2229 of New York) tying for third with a host of other players from throughout the country with 5 wins in the K-8 Open section. Other standouts included Laura Cordovi (Jose Marti), Jorge Torres (Rockway) and Brian Vazquez (Rockway) all scored 5.5 to tie for 3rd with many othersin the K-8 U1250 section. Juan Trujillo (Rockway) tied for 2nd in the K-8 U1000 with others. Also tying for second in the K-8 U750 section were Rockway students Nicholas Castano, Conrad Ambroise, and Jason Gutierrez. Curry Middle was represented by Abelardo Montalvo who won 4.5, Cuba Levenberry (4.0,1081), and, Jeffrey Valencia with a 3.0.
Below is a game 8th grader Jesse Diaz (1328) of Rockway played against Andy Shao (1549) in the K-8 Open section. Jesse played black in this game and won 4/7 games. This game was shown live by Monroi over the internet.

Why are these kids so under-rated? Lets get these kids some real ratings so they can compete against the big boys in the open section...where the real chess is played!
